  • We've been nominated!

Best Business EnablerWe're thrilled to report that we have been nominated as 'Best Business Enabler' in the forthcoming National Entrepreneur Awards, to be held at the Entrepreneurs Convention at the ICC later this month.

Billed as the category for businesses 'who best demonstrate their importance to their clients and who can demonstrate the difference that they make, who are committed to actively helping other businesses grow while constantly improving themselves.' That certainly sounds like what we work hard to do so we hope we're in with a chance, but even if we're not, we are really pleased to have been nominated in such prestigious awards, and will look forward to the Awards ceremony on the 21st September!

We'll keep you posted with our progress; what awards are you entering this year that we need to know about? We'd love to be able to share news of your successes, but in the meantime please keep your fingers crossed for us!

  • We're now a Xero Certified Advisor!

Xero Certified AdvisorsAlthough we have been advocating Xero for some time, we are really pleased to be able to announce that we are now 'Certified Advisors'. This means that we have taken Xero's own tests to ensure that we are fully trained in getting the best from the software for our clients, and of course helping them get the most from it too.

Chris loves the flexibility of the software and recently moved our own accounts over to it, saying 'Xero really have disrupted the market in terms of Accounting software. They have thought about the system from a user's perspective which is great both for us and for our clents.'

Quickbooks & Sage OneAs a cloud based system, there are many benefits to Xero which we would of course be very happy to explain, including online bank feeds and sending invoices whilst you are on the move, but we will still be maintaining our knowledge and helping clients with the many other systems that we are also accredited in using, from SageOne to Quickbooks, as well as FreeAgent, Kashflow, Liberty and of course our own software that we provide to clients free of charge. Each has their own benefits and features that may make one more suitable than another for a particular business and we firmly believe that one size does not fit all!

If you or anyone you know is struggling with their software, or without any at all, do ask them to get in touch as those days can become a thing of the past very quickly!

  • Come and meet the Experts!

Masterplan 2014

At an Entrepreneurs Circle event at the end of June, Liz and Chris were part of a panel of experts at a four day event to help small business owners implement the key steps to move their businesses forward.

In a format not dissimilar to 'speed dating', delegates that wanted to ask questions or who had specific queries around their accounts or tracking the numbers within their businesses had a half hour slot to put their questions, with many popping in for a quick chat in between times and in breaks.

It was a hectic few days, with lots of great ideas and chellenges, but it was brilliant fun as well. Many of the delegates just didn't appreciate the depth or range of experience that a good accountant is able to provide and the feedback was brilliant.

We came home exhausted!

  • We're opening our doors for Pop-Up Networking!

BDCC LogoHaving seen the growing success of the Pop-up networking events being organised by the Berkhamsted Chamber of Commerce, we are very pleased to be able to invite members and anyone interested in finding out more about the benefits of membership to an informal evening of canapes, conversation and a glass of wine on Tuesday 3rd June between 6pm and 8pm at our offices in Claridge Court, Berkhamsted.

If you would like to join us, please email so that we have an idea of numbers before the event. In keeping with the usual arrangements for the Chamber events, there is a small fee of £5 which can be paid on arrival.

We look forward to seeing you!

  • We're now an Entrepreneur's Circle Trusted Supplier!

Entrepreneur's Circle Trusted SupplierAs long standing members of the Entrepreneur's Circle, we were really pleased when they approached us to become a founder member of their Trusted Supplier Programme.

The Entrepreneur's Circle wanted to identify businesses that they know, like and trust, and who they knew they could safely recommend to their members, and we are one of only two accountants who fall into this category!

  • Mark Allsop has joined the team!

Mark Allsop

Following Aaron's recent departure for pastures news (otherwise known as a fabulous role with Ernst & Young where he will complete his training) we are very pleased to have welcomed Mark Allsop, FCCA, to the team.

As you may well have gathered, Mark is fully qualified, so will further strengthen the knowledge and experience within the office. Dealing with a broad portfolio, Mark will work particularly closely with our larger clients, led by Chris and Shaun, while supporting development and training internally.

Welcome aboard Mark!

  • Small Business Saturday was a great success!

Small Business Saturday Visitors

Though in it's first year, Small Business Saturday was well worth the effort!

Amongst other visitors to the office during the day were local Mayor, Ian Reay, Chairman of Berkhamsted Chamber of Commerce, David Steadman, and MP for South West Hertfordshire and Executive Secretary to the Treasury, David Gauke.

Copies of our free guide to 'Planning for 2014' were available, along with nibbles, hot drinks, a competition to win a hamper of all sorts of Thornton's chocolate and, of course, appointments with Chris and Shaun.

It's certainly an event we'll be repeating next year; what will you do to encourage people to visit you and raise awareness of your business? Do let us know as we'd love to help promote clients' events!

(Special thanks to Cynthia Nolan of Shoot Me Studios for the photos of the event. Cynthia is an award winning photographer with a tremendous range of experience from portraits to boudoir, celebrities to fashion and with locations in Berkhamsted, Watford and Carnaby Street.)

  • We're supporting Small Business Saturday on the 7th December!

A new initiative for the UK, Small Business Saturday has come to us from the US, but is already gaining momentum in it's first year. We will be opening for business for the full day, so if you would like to book a thirty minute slot with Chris or Shaun, or just want to drop your records in, it would be great to see you!

Small Business SaturdayAs a firm, our priority is to help small businesses who want to grow, so this seemed like a fabulous intiative for us to get involved with. Opening from 9am until 5pm, we'll have some treats for adults and children alike, some giveaways and a competition too, so do pass the news amongst your friends and family and get them to call in and say hello.

If you would like to book a slot with Chris or Shaun, please be sure to book in advance; they are going to be in high demand!

  • We are one of the Top Three Medium Sized firms in the Country for our Client Service!

As you can see from the item below, we were recently voted into the Top Ten Medium Sized Firms in the Country for our Client Service, and were then put through to the Top Three by a panel of industry judges!

At an Award ceremony at Vinopolis in London, we found out that sadly we didn't win the category, but are still so pleased to have made the Top Three, a major achievement as we were up againt far larger firms, having just scraped into the category!

The whole team is thrilled that the judges have acknowledged that our constant attention to the smallest of improvements is enabling us to continually improve our service, and that they have approved our focus on helping all of our clients achieve their goals, whether to develop their business, reduce their tax bill or simply to make their business more efficient.

Top Three Medium Sized Firms LogoOnce again though, we will not be sitting back and relaxing having reached the Top Three, we will continue to look for other areas we can improve and would welcome your views and thoughts as to how we can do so.

Thank you again to all of our clients who voted for us in the initial stages; we are very grateful that you took the time to help us.

  • Our clients have voted us into the Top Ten Medium Sized firms in the Country for our Client Service!

Back in June, we sent out a survey link to all of our clients, asking them if they would take just a few minutes to answer some questions about our service. Conducted by one of the accounting industries major publishers, any answers were going to be totally anonymous, so we hoped to receive a really clear picture of what clients actually thought about us, without any worries about hurt feelings!

Happily, we needn't have worried, as the feedback put us into the Top Ten firms of our size in the country, and has propelled us into the next round of what is actually a competition. We had no thoughts that this would ever be the case, so are extremely grateful to everyone that voted for us!

Having progressed, we have the right to use the 'Top Ten' logo, which the eagle eyed amongst our visitors may have noticed on the page above, but just for good measure we have pasted it here too.

We are delighted to have got such a dramatic vote of confidence from all of our clients, but can assure you that we will not be resting on our laurels, but will continue to look for ways in which we can improve our service, and will always be looking for feedback on any aspect of what we do, whether anonymous or not!

A huge 'Thank you' to everyone who took the time to complete the survey on our behalf; we will keep you posted as to progress with the competition, but in the meantime have listed below just a few of the very kind comments that were added to the survey:

'Rickaby & Co are outstandingly professional, knowledgable and effective... a God-send to my business.'

'Rickaby & Co are essential with regard to the smooth month to month operation of our business whilst their Outsourced FD service through Chris Baranov is invaluable to our forward planning and growth; they really are part of our team.'

'In our own finance business, we have interaction with many different Accountants so we gain a small insight into those firms who appear to provide just the basics, and those who add genuine value to their clients' business. Rickaby & Co are definitely in the latter category and we are pleased to continue our relationship with them.'

  • Liz wins 'Entrepreneur of the Month' award from 'The Entrepreneurs' Circle'

As a long standing member of 'The Entrepreneurs' Circle', Liz is always striving to improve our marketing, so was thrilled to receive this award. Not only is it a fabulous achievement to receive the award, but it's actually the second time Liz has received it, an indication of the effort that she puts in to keeping our social media, this website and our other marketing efforts evolving and developing.

What is 'The Entrepreneurs' Circle'? Find out more here, and if you would like to chat to Liz about the benefits to be gained from a trial membership, give her a call!

Entrepreneur of the Month - August 2013
  • We're 'Good Eggs'!

To celebrate Shaun becoming a Partner on the 1st April, which ties in both with the Easter weekend and it being the first time Easter has fallen on this weekend since Chris took over the business from John Rickaby in 2002, we have donated 50 Easter Eggs to the Hospice of St Francis, for whom we are a proud Corporate Sponsor.

The local Gazette have just published an article that explains more about our motivation.

  • Liz gets her hands on Olympic Gold!

Redgrave, Pinsent, Cracknell and Foster are names we all know from the Olympic Rowing world, but Hunt Davis is less well known. However, his story is just as fascinating, and when Liz attended the Entrepreneur's Circle event earlier this week and had the chance to meet him and get her hands on his Gold Medal, she jumped at it!

Ben Hunt Davis was part of the Mens 8+ in the Sydney Olympics, who had routinely finished their regattas in 7th, 8th or 9th, but also part of the team that decided that things had to change in the two years leading up to Olympics.

Their focus became entirely based on one race, the Sydney final, and every decision, every training session and almost every waking moment was governed by one question, 'Will it make the boat go faster', which has since become the title of Ben's book, and the subject matter that he spoke about on Monday.

Many of the issues the team faced in the two years leading up to the final in Sydney, in terms of sacrifices and goal planning can be likened to the challenges faced by business owners, so the question is, what would your equivalent question be?

  • We're celebrating our tenth Anniversary!

On 28th March 2002, Chris signed the agreement that saw him take over ownership of Rickaby & Co from John Rickaby, for whom he'd worked since 1989.

Over the last ten years we have been thrilled that many of those original clients are still with us, while many others have joined. During the same time, the range of services that Rickaby & Co are able to provide has been developed, which now do far more than just keep clients from late filing penalties.

We have also gathered together a fantastic team of people who are enthusiastic to help clients and who want share their experience and training; we are very proud to have every one of them working with us.

None of this would have been possible without those original clients having faith in our being able to maintain and enhance the service that they had trusted from John Rickaby, or those who have introduced friends and family to us over the years.

We would therefore like to send a huge 'thank you' to all of our clients, contacts, friends and family for their help and support over the last ten years, and look forward to the next ten!

  • Dressed to the K9's Competition in support of Every Chance Rescue

We are very pleased to be able to support the third annual ‘Dressed to the K9s’ competition being organised by award winning pet care and behaviour company Walk the Dog, owned by dog listener Hanne Grice.

Dressed to the K9s 2011
Every Chance Rescue is a non-profit making organisation that works with dogs that other organisations find impossible to rehome, ensuring that they are given every chance to find a caring forever home, fully supported by Dog Listeners.

With entries open from 1st February until the 24th April, pet owners are encouraged to take a photo of their pet in some kind of fancy dress, submit it online to the competition website and keep their fingers crossed that they will win the fantastic first prize worth nearly £2,000.

As frustrated dog owners ourselves, we are very happy to be able to support this lighthearted competition that has a serious and very important cause, to be able to offer a secure future to dogs that otherwise may not have one.
Why not submit your entry and make a donation, however small?

Chris is co-presenting this seminar as part of the ‘Business Friday’ series at Pendley Manor in Tring on Friday 8th October. • The Rickaby & Co World Cup Competition

This summer’s World Cup competition gives football fans the opportunity to enjoy sixty four matches between the opening ceremony on the 12th June and the final on the 11th July. For those of us who are not football fans, the seemingly endless coverage can quickly become extremely tedious!

In an attempt to find some point of interest amongst the hype, we have come up with a plan for a competition to take you right through to the final in Johannesburg. The more accurately you predict the score for each match, the more points you earn, the winner being the entrant with the most points on the 11th July. Full details can be found here, together with a full schedule of matches. Good luck!

Updated positions as we progress through the competition can be found here.

  • The Brighton Marathon - 18th April 2010

Many clients will already know that Liz has been running for several years, ever since Chris cajoled her to join him when he was running on a regular basis. It has always been a goal of hers to step up from the Half Marathon distance to the full 26.2 miles, and this April that day will come!

Running in aid of the Hospice of St Francis, based in Berkhamsted, Liz would be extremely grateful for any donations, whatever the size; the thought of the sponsorship will help keep her pounding the streets during her training. A link to her Justgiving site is here

  • Santa Dash for Chilterns MS Centre - December 2009

Having visited the Chilterns MS Centre in Wendover and seen the plans for their new building and how the improved facilities will help sufferers and their families, we thought that we would help with the fundraising and the idea of entering the Santa Dash 2009 was born!
